Among the Bulgarians, woodcarving is considered a purely male craft, and there are two main types of woodcarving: small-surface and large deep woodcuts.Since immemorial times, the Bulgarians have carved wood, depicting nature on shepherd's pipes and crooks, on chests and cradles, on weaving looms. From a widely practiced art it turned into a craft (15th -18th century). Centres were created where woodcarving became a hereditary, traditional profession (Tryavna, Koprivshtitsa, Kotel, Zheravna, Troyan and Teteven).
