Nesebar is an ancient city, well-known for its romantic sights. It is a major seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria located to the northeast of Burgas. Its most distinctive features are the cobble-stone streets, the well preserved Medieval churches and the timbered houses dating back to the 19th century. Founded by the ancient Thracians in 3rd millennium BC, Nesebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe. At the beginning of the 6th century BC the town became a Greek colony and an important trade center. Even though it fell under Roman rule in 71 BC, it continued to enjoy various privileges. The town was one of the most important strongholds of the Byzantine Empire from the 5th century AD onwards, and was fought over by Byzantines and Bulgarians several times throughout the centuries. The capture of the town by the Turks in 1453 marked the start of its decline, but its architectural heritage remained and was enriched in the 19th century by the construction of wooden houses in style typical for the Bulgarian Revival period. At the beginning of the 20th century Nesebar developed as a key Bulgarian seaside resort and in 1925 a new part of the town was built. The most exciting thing about Nesebar is the unique combination of Bulgaria's ancient culture and modern life.
