Sozopol

Sozopol is an ancient town and seaside resort located 35 km southeast of Burgas. The first settlement on the site dates back to the Bronze Age. Many anchors from the second and first millennium BC have been discovered in the town's bay, a proof of active shipping since ancient times.

The town, at first called Antheia, was colonized in 610 BC by Milesian settlers. The name was soon changed to Apollonia, on account of the town temple containing a famous colossal statue dedicated to the god of Health, Sun and Beauty – Apollo.

Numerous red and black figural vases, colored glass vessels, jewelry, amphorae and anchors, now exhibited in the town's Museum of Ancient Art, date from the heyday of this flourishing town and state. The unique atmosphere of the town is complemented by the touch of the Bulgarian National Revival period, which left its own vivid marks – a fine architectural ensemble of solid wooden houses.
